Waterford Green Party Expands Presence in Town Government
Media Contact: Joshua Steele Kelly, [email protected]
On Tuesday, January 9th, 2018, the Waterford Board of Selectmen unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Billy G. Collins and Alexander Kuvalanka to alternate vacancies on the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals and the Flood and Erosion Control Board respectively. The Waterford Greens now hold a total of 13 elected and appointed positions within the town government, as well as another 8 seats within the Representative Town Meeting’s (RTM) standing committees. This officially makes Waterford the town to have the greatest number of elected and appointed Greens in office in New England.
The Waterford Greens have been exceptionally active in the months since their tremendous success at the polls, when they won four seats on the RTM and another alternate seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals. The party has seen growth in membership and attendance at meetings, and the group has recently announced that they will be spearheading two new community projects, which includes hosting a series of speakers at the Waterford Public Library. The four legislators now seated on the RTM have created the state’s first Green caucus, and they are set to introduce their first round of legislation at the RTM’s February meeting. The WGP campaigned in 2017 on a platform that focused on governmental transparency, environmentalism, and fiscal responsibility.
The Party is actively seeking Waterford residents who are interested in serving on town boards and commissions. Those wishing to get involved are encouraged to contact WGP Chair Josh Kelly at [email protected] Specific party affiliation is not required to be nominated for such positions by the WGP.
